ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

POSTGRADUATE

Admission Requirements into Ph.D programme

To be eligible for admission into the Ph.D programme in Health Education, the candidate should possess a Masters degree of the University of Benin or of other recognized universities in an area relevant to Health Education. Where the Masters Degree is not directly in health Education, the Undergraduate Degree must be in health education or health education with other combinations. Students admitted under this dispensation shall be required to take and pass all Faculty and departmental courses where there are deficiencies as verifiable from their official transcripts. All such admissions shall be regarded as ‘conditional admissions’ subject to satisfying the examiners in all the deficient courses as demonstrated by a minimum 60% in each course. In addition to the above, all candidates will be required to attend oral interview before admission. All candidates must have a CGPA of at least 60% in the Master Degree work.

Duration of the Doctoral Programmes

The minimum period for the completion of the Doctoral of Philosophy Degree in Health Education shall be 24 months. The maximum period for completion of the programme shall 84 months.

Degree Requirement

Every student registered for the Doctor of Philosophy Degree in Health Education must take and pass all prescribed courses approved for the programme. He or she must also write thesis and defend it orally before an approved panel.

Admission requirements into the M.Sc. Degree Programme

To be admitted into the Master of Education Degree Programme in School Health Education, a candidate shall possess at least a Second Class Lower Division Degree from a recognized University in Health Education or Health Education with other combination, e.g. Health and Home Economics, Health and Physical Education etc.

Duration of the M.Sc. Programme

The minimum duration for the M.Sc. Programme is one calendar year with maximum of four years.

M.Sc. Degree Requirements

A candidate in the M.Sc. Programme must register for and pass twenty-seven credit hours of M.Sc. courses with a minimum pass mark of 60%. Furthermore, the candidate must write a project which proposal shall be successfully defended before a Panel of Departmental Board of Postgraduate Internal Examiners.

Admission Requirements into MPHE Degree Programme

To be admitted into the Master of Public Health Education Programme, a candidate shall possess at least a Second Class Lower Division Degree in Health Education, or related areas, e.g. Home Economics, Nutrition Kinetics, Safety Environmental Science, Biology, Microbiology, etc from a recognized University. Candidates with 3rd Class Honours will be considered for admission after five years of cognate experience in Public Health Education practice. All candidates shall be required to attend a departmental selection interview.

UNDERGRADUATE

B.Sc. (Ed) ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION

Admission requirement for the four year full-time Programme: (UTME)

Candidates seeking admission into this programme should possess any of

the following qualifications:

At least Five Ordinary Level Credit Pass in WAEC, SSCE/GCE, NECO,

SSCE/GCE, NABTEB, or at least Five Merit Level Passes in the Teachers

Grade II Certificate Examination (TC.II) or any other recognized equivalent

obtained at not more than two sittings. They should include English

Language, Mathematics and Biology/Agricultural Science

Note: Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) Subjects are:

          (a)       Use of English

          (b)       One Science subject

          (c)       Any other two Sciences or Social Science subject

Admission requirement for the three year full-time Degree programme

(Direct Entry)

B. Sc.(Ed.) Environmental Education

Candidates seeking admission into this programme should possess any of

the following qualifications:

  1. At least two merit level passes in the Nigeria Certificate of Education (NCE) one of which should be in Health Education, Biology, Biology/Agricultural Science,  Integrated Science or Environmental Education and three Ordinary level credit passes in WASC, WAEC, SSCE/GCE, NECO, NABTEB, or at least Three Merit Level Passes in the Teachers Grade II Certificate Examination (TC.II) or any other recognized equivalent obtained at one sitting or five O’ level credits at not more than two sittings. The subjects should include English Language, Mathematics, and Biology/Agricultural Science.
  • At least a merit level pass in the University of Benin Diploma or a credit pass from a recognized University in Health Education or Environmental Heath or Heath Statistics or Social Work, Health Technology Administration or Community Health and at least three O’ level passes in WASC, WAEC, SSCE/GCE, NECO, NABTEB, NTC/NBC or three merit passes in the Teacher Grade Two Certificate Examination (TC. II) or any of their recognized equivalent obtained at one sitting or five O’ level credit passes at two sittings. The subjects should include English Language  Mathematics, and Biology/Agricultural Science

B.Sc. (Ed) HEALTH EDUCATION

Candidates seeking admission into this programme should possess any of

the following qualifications:

At least Five Ordinary Level Credit Pass in WAEC, SSCE/GCE, NECO,

SSCE/GCE, NABTEB, or at least Five Merit Level Passes in the Teachers

Grade II Certificate Examination (TC.II) or any other recognized equivalent

obtained at not more than two sittings. They should include English

Language, Mathematics and one Science subject.

Admission Requirements for the three year full-time degree programme (direct entry)

B.Sc. (Ed.) Health Education

Candidates seeking admission into this programme should possess any of

the following qualifications:

  1.   • At least a merit level pass in the University of Benin Diploma or a credit pass from a recognized University in Health Education or Environmental Heath or Heath Statistics or Social Work, Health Technology Administration or Community Health and at least three O’ level passes in WASC, WAEC, SSCE/GCE, NECO, NABTEB, NTC/NBC or three merit passes in the Teacher Grade Two Certificate Examination (TC. II) or any of their recognized equivalent obtained at one sitting or five O’ level credit passes at two sittings. The subjects should include English Language and Mathematics and one science subject.
  • Credit pass level in Certificate for Community Health Extension Worker

(CHEW) and five O’ level credits passes in WASC, WAEC, SSCE/GCE, NECO, NABTEB, at not more than two sittings. The subjects should include English Language, Mathematics and one science subject.

  • At least Registered Nurse Certificate, and Five O’ level Credit passes in WASC, WAEC, SSCE/GCE, NECO, NABTEB, or at least five Merit Level Passes in the Teachers Grade II Certificate Examination (TC.II) or any other recognized equivalent obtained at one sitting or five O’ level credits at not more than two sittings. The subjects should include English Language, Mathematics and one science subject.
