WELCOME ADDRESS BY THE HEAD OF DEPARTMENT OF ADULT AND NON-FORMAL EDUCATION
It is with great delight I welcome you to the department of Adult and Non-Formal Education in the Faculty of Education, University of Benin, Benin City. Adult Education is the mother of all profession and so as a department, we strive to produce high level, manpower that fit into all areas of our economy. The department is blessed with quality experienced staff both academic and non-academic) well grounded in research and teaching.
It is interesting to note that our graduates can serve in any relevant human endeavour.
The department currently offers programmes in the following areas:
1. Adult and Non-formal Education
2. Adult Education English and Literature
3. Adult Education Political Science
4. Adult Education Economics
5. Adult Education Geography
With these different programmes, the department has been able to offer training that meet the demand of the world of work today. `The department is equally running a post graduate programme both at the Masters and Ph.D levels.
In view of this, I on behalf of the University of Benin, Faculty of Education, staff and students of the department, welcome you to UNIBEN especially the department of Adult and Non-formal Education.
HISTORY OF THE PROGRAMME/SUB-DISCIPLINE/DISCIPLINE
This Department was established in November 1976 as an outreach of the Faculty of Education. In reflection of its mission it was named the center for Extra-Mural studies and Extension Services, and was thus running courses in the General Certificate of Education at both the ordinary and Advanced levels at its initial stage. Later, it provided Community services in Nursing Administration, Teachers Grade Two Courses. A.I.B and J.A.I.E classes. At the peak of reaching out to the community, it also provided courses leading to the award of the bachelor of Law degree of the University of London. To better reach the unserved, the outreach programme aimed at mounting literacy classes and courses in Insurance, Advertising and Marketing. All these intended courses have had to be shelved for contingency reasons.
In the 1979/80 session, the center was renamed the Department of Adult Education and Extra-Mural Studies with the Faculty of Education as the core of its operational system. With the growing national interest in Adult and non-formal Education, the Department began its first-degree programme in Adult and Non-Formal Education and included the teaching subjects during the 1982/83 sessions, the senate having approved this programme in July 1982. Since then, the Department has been striving to develop the divisions such that they could offer better an popular programmes. In order to join the global world, the Department once more changed its nomenclature to Adult and Non-Formal Education to reflect many and varied programmes offered in the curriculum. In all of these, our actions have been guided by the specific objectives informing the establishment of the Department.
Presently, the Department offers courses leading to the award of Bachelor of Education in Adult Education and teaching subjects in the areas of English and Literature, Political Science, Economics and Statistics, Geography and Regional Planning and Fine Art and Diploma in Adult Education. The Department runs a postgraduate Programme at the Masters level and only commenced a Ph.D programmes in 2009 / 2010 session. To actualize this mission, the Department is supported by a crop of qualified, educated seasoned academic and supportive staff.
PHILOSOPHY
Philosophy of the programme, Adult Education is essentially anchored on the development and production of quality personnel in the area of human and societal development issues within the broad spectrum of Adult Education as a field of study. In this regarded, the department seek to provide an enabling environment for the provision of apple educators to effectively conceptualize theoretical knowledge with practical skills in the various sphere of Adult education. Basically therefore, the philosophy of the programme is to produce manpower that are well grounded in the study of Adult Education

To be come one of the best Adult Education Department in the Faculty of Education as Nigeria and known for promoting theoretical and practical knowledge, attitude and skills in line with the best professional practices in the world.

To produce quality personnel well grounded in research, relevant attitude, skills and knowledge and capable of living a fully productive and useful life by promoting innovations that will advance societal growth and development.
AIMS
The department aims to produce high level manpower in the area of adult and Non-|formal education ad also contributed towards the growth and development of the discipline through research and publications.
