The Department of Educational Studies and Management is one of the departments in Faculty of Education, University of Benin, Benin City. Its primary objective is to train the much needed graduate teachers for post primary institutions all over the country.

I welcome you all to this great department. The Department came into existence in 1979/80 session as the Department of Educational Administration and Foundations (DEAF).

In July 2006, because of nomenclature which the staff felt should reflect who they were decided to change DEAF to Educational Studies and Management (ESAM). In 2014 ESAM was divided into the Department of Educational Management and Department of Educational Foundations.

The Department of Educational Management is a pace-setter, a model to all department with six (6) Professors and one (1) Emeritus Professor is staffed with high caliber individuals who work as a team.

The Department runs nine (9) undergraduate programmes, Masts and MPhil in Educational Management, Ph.D in Educational Administration and Educational Planning. Our graduates hold important positions in tertiary and secondary levels of education, politics, ministries etc. The Department is hosting the Nigerian Association for Educational Administration and Planning in October this year which is a rare privilege usually given to the universities.

The Department has its own unique journal Nigerian Journal of Education Management. The Department can compete better in global setting and forging ahead to be the best Department of Educational Management in the whole world.

HISTORY OF THE DEPARTMENT

Department of Educational Studies and Management was established in 1979/1980 session as the Department of Educational Administration and Foundations (DEAF). In 2006, the Department changed its name from Department of Educational Administration and Foundations (DEAF) to Educational Studies and Management (ESAM). In July 2014, the department was split into Department of Educational Management made up of Educational and Educational Planning and the Department of Educational Foundations. The Department of Educational Management is staffed with high quality personnel with strong academic background and high integrity. There are three (3) professors in Administration plus one (1) Emeritus Professor and three (3) professors and the one (1) Associate Professor in Planning. There are also lower cadres of academic staff.

The Department of Educational Management is a pace-setter. It is the department that strives to show that educational organization can be managed with success by applying all the managerial techniques and seeing that results are achieved. It is a role model department for all other departments with the staff seeing themselves as team players.

The Department has produced many high level manpower for both first degree and post graduate degree levels. These can be found in every sector of the economy especially in tertiary and secondary education, ministries, politics etc.
