Old School Students

It is my pleasure to welcome you to the Department of Educational Foundations, one of the eight departments of the Faculty of Education, University of Benin. The department aims to produce high level teaching personnel in the Arts and Humanities, especially in the language areas of English and Literature, French, Edo, Fine and Applied Arts, History and Religious Studies. The Department also makes its contributions through research and publication towards the growth of teaching and improvement of the quality of teachers and the teaching profession in Nigeria. It also prepares the students for a variety of job situations including Research, Management, and other professional work in the public and private sectors. The Department also offers postgraduate programmes (M.Ed, M.Phil and Ph.D) in the core academic areas of Foundations, including Philosophy of Education, Sociology of Education, History of Education and Comparative Education. The postgraduate programmes are run in close collaboration with the academics in other Faculties of the University of Benin.

PHILOSOPHY OF THE DEPARTMENT

The Philosophy of the department is the production of graduates who are well trained in the teaching profession and can bring such training to bear in whatever roles they may be called upon to play in the course of National development. The combined Honours Degree programmes available in the Department cater for diverse academic interests of students and prepare them for teaching and a variety of job situations including Research, Management and other professional work in both the public and private sectors.

OBJECTIVES OF THE DEPARTMENT

The Department aims to produce high level teacher personnel and contribute through research and publications towards the growth of teaching and the improvement of the quality of teachers and the teaching profession in Nigeria and beyond.

ACADEMIC PROGRAMMES

The Department of Educational Foundations course areas are: English and Literature, French, Edo, History, Religion and Fine and Applied Arts.

The Department in collaboration with other Departments of the University runs both undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. The undergraduate level courses include:

The programmes in the department are designed to meet the ever changing challenges of contemporary times in the global labour market. Consequently the programmes are revised from time to time in line with international best practices in order to expose our graduates to current academic and technological breakthrough, as well as to make them conversant with innovative ideas, so as to remain relevant even beyond the 21st Century.
